Ceiling Box Replacement for Chandeliers
When installing a chandelier, it is easy to focus on how it will look, but it is just as important to make sure the fixture is securely supported. That support begins with the ceiling electrical box and the hardware holding the chandelier in place.
The Problem: Old or Worn Boxes Can Fail
Many older homes have ceiling boxes that were never intended to support heavier chandeliers. Some boxes are decades old, brittle, poorly secured, or have stripped mounting tabs.
- Old electrical boxes may be degraded, rusted, brittle, or improperly attached.
- Some boxes are not rated for heavier chandeliers or modern fixture hardware.
- Mounting tabs, screw holes, or “ears” may be stripped, cracked, loose, or weakened.
- Plastic boxes may become brittle over time and may support less weight than expected.
Important: Chandeliers often hang from just two mounting points. If those screw holes or tabs are stripped or loose, the entire fixture can sag, shift, or fall.
What Is Included — and What Is Not
- Included with installation review: We inspect the existing ceiling box as part of the chandelier installation process.
- Not included by default: Ceiling box replacement is not included in a standard quote unless requested, recommended, approved, and added in writing.
- Separately quoted: If the existing box is damaged, improperly rated, unsafe, or unsuitable for the fixture, replacement will be quoted separately before proceeding.
- Customer responsibility: If a recommended box replacement is declined, we are not responsible for damage, fixture failure, or safety issues caused by the existing box.
Why Replacement Is Worth It
- Provides a safer support point for chandelier mounting hardware.
- Allows use of a modern, support-rated metal box when appropriate.
- Helps reduce risk of fixture sway, sagging, shifting, or detachment.
- Improves confidence when installing heavier or more valuable chandeliers.
- May be paired with a chandelier security cable for additional support planning.
Ceiling Box Replacement Pricing and Process
This service may involve shutting off power at the breaker, disconnecting existing wiring, removing the old box, and installing a new support-rated metal box suited to the weight and support needs of your chandelier.
Boxes may be mounted to a ceiling joist or hung between joists using a support bar. Some installations require attic access, additional labor, or unusual access planning. Demolition may be necessary in rare cases, and drywall or painting repairs are not included.
Standard ceiling box replacement starts at $240.
The starting price includes the upgraded box and standard installation conditions. This is intended for chandeliers up to approximately 35 pounds when site conditions allow. Heavier chandeliers, unusual ceilings, access issues, old wiring, framing concerns, or added support requirements may require separate pricing.
